SOUTHPORT'S CONCERN ABOUT CHANGE
Navigating Change in Southport is the topic for the annual meeting of the Southport Conservancy, which will be held Sunday, May 18th, at 4 p.m. at the Eagle Hill School , 214 Main Street , near the harbor in Southport.
The brief business meeting will be followed by presentations from a panel that includes Ellen Gould, Chairman of the Historic District Commission; Seth Baratz, Chairman of the Town Plan & Zoning Commission; David Gray from the Southport Train Station Task Force; and Hallock Svensk from the Hamden-based Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
Talks will focus on the work of each organization with suggestions about how the public can work most effectively with the rules and regulations to preserve historic atmosphere. Anyone interested in learning about opportunities to protect Fairfield's history is invited to attend. The meeting will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.
The Southport Conservancy was formed, as a 501 (c) (3) organization, to raise funds for the purchase of the former Pequot School , now the Eagle Hill School , to assure its use as a school and to save it from developers. In addition to the Eagle Hill School property, the Conservancy maintains the Old Freight Station in Southport and the open space at the corner of Pequot Avenue and Prospect Lane in the village and has been active in ongoing efforts to preserve the venerable Osborn House on Kings Highway West .
The Conservancy's mission is to preserve the historic traditions, architectural style and scenic appearance of the Village of Southport and to promote the preservation and conservation of the historic, educational, cultural, environmental and scenic treasures of the Village of Southport through education of the public, surveys of buildings and districts, and through direct acquisitions of properties of significance.

The Lost Supermarket: A Breed In Need of Replenishment (May 5, 2008)
A recent New York Times article highlighted how "a continuing decline in the number of neighborhood supermarkets has made it harder for millions of New Yorkers to find fresh and affordable food within walking distance of their homes."
"...In some cases, the old storefronts have been converted to drug stores that stand to make money coming and going- first selling processed foods and sodas, then selling medicines for illnesses that could have been prevented by a better diet."
