The Fairfield Minuteman, December 27, 2007

The building at 1280 Stratfield Road sits vacant for over a year, with visible wires and metal beams hanging from the ceilings and a meager attempt to soap up the windows. Every day, this vacant eyesore is a black eye for Walgreens. Some companies maintain the appearance of dignity even when faced with obstacles....Not Walgreens! Pictures to come shortly of this poorly managed project and what a Walgreens might do for your own neighborhood.

WHY WE ARE FIGHTING WALGREENS AND OTHER FAQs

FRIDAY, JAN 11, 2008- JUDGE RULES ANOTHER BLOW FOR WALGREENS- no new evidence allowed. WALGREENS VS. FAIRFIELD in Bridgeport Superior Court now. Walgreens had hoped to argue that since the Tunxis Hill Neighborhood has already been bullied into allowing a large chain dominate their NDBD, then Walgreens should be able to steamroll Stratfield also. More details to come........ click here for Fairfield Minuteman story.

Court Hearings begin on Walgreens vs. Fairfield ZBA
Walgreens vs. Fairfield ZBA began with a hearing on Jan. 11th, and immediately Walgreens has been dealt another blow: the Judge has denied their motion to submit new evidence in this case.
Read all about it in the CT Post.

July 2007
Walgreens sues Fairfield (again)
Walgreens has decided to submit yet another lawsuit into our court system in attempts to squeeze their way into space in Stratfield Village. This time it's against the TPZ.
Boycott? Picket?? The SVA is working on our next plan of attack, proving that even a full year later, after rallies, pickets, hundreds of lawn signs, and multiple zoning meetings, we are not going away.

July 10, 2007
VICTORY!
On July 10th, the TPZ voted that Walgreens DOES NOT belong in Stratfield!!!!!
In addition, the TPZ also approved the Zoning amendment that requires ALL chain stores to obtain a permit before entering a Neighborhood Designed Business District.
This ruling was lauded by a The New Rules Project, a national organization which is fighting the destructive nature of big-box stores across the country.
Read about the details of this ruling and the Store Size Cap for ALL NDBD.

This is a victory for ALL of Fairfield!!!
From Southport to Stratfield, from Greenfield Hill to Reef Road, this protects ALL of Fairfield's neighborhoods. Congratulations to Julie DeMarco, Margee Zellers, Elizabeth Jones, Clif Myers, and our esteemed lawyer, Joel Green!
Will Walgreens pull out and save their customer base in their proposed 4 other Fairfield locations?
Or
Will they pursue their lawsuit against the town of Fairfield and hope it won't affect the sentiment of the rest of the town?

Don't throw away your picket signs!!

THE TPZ MEETING
Who wants Walgreens to take a hike?
showofhands
The Walgreens showdown:
Approx 200 local residents flooded the BOE Conference Room on June 6th to show the TPZ just how unreceptive Stratfield is to a Walgreens bullying its way into our neighborhood.
The TPZ will now have 65 days to make their decision.

"Walgreens, is it needed in that community? Is it desirable in that community? Clearly not."

March 2007
THE ZBA MEETING

STRATFIELD: 1    WALGREENS: 0
Hundreds show their support for Stratfield at ZBA Meeting!

"I do think when they created this Neighborhood Designed Business District, they truly had something in mind — stores that do primarily serve a local neighborhood, and I'm not sure Walgreens does fit that definition,"
-ZBA Chairman Robert Brennan.

ZBA DECISIONS
  • Does Walgreens constitute a "change of use" requiring them to go before the TPZ?
The ZBA voted YES! This TPZ hearing will be our opportunity to show that Walgreens is NOT looking to primarily serve the local neighborhood, as dictated by current Zoning regulations for that site.
  • Does the parking variance for the left side apply to the original tenant only (Gran Central,) or should the parking variance belong to the property, and any tenant who goes in.
Unfortunately, the ZBA voted that the parking variance belongs to the property and any tenant that goes in.
    What's Next
Walgreens Sues Fairfield over ZBA decision

Walgreens has since filed a lawsuit in Bridgeport Superior Court requesting that the courts overturn the ZBA decision. This lawsuit will probably not be decided until Fall of 2007.
